I have about 1/3 of an acre that I want to landscape. I think what I need to do is have my current crab grass ripped out and dug out by a tractor and new sprinkler system put in etc... I am not sure where to start. In other words, should I go with a landscape designer and a contractor or ? I have been to Home Depot and got some books on landscaping but it all seems so overwhelming...and I only have about $3,000 to put towards this... I know it won't get me far. I want to put in a koi pond at some point, but I think the earth excavation is the first step. I get so overwhelmed with it all, not knowing where to begin and should I hire a draftsmen, how much do they cost roughly etc...

Re: Need some direction please
Mon, November 7, 2005 - 9:00 AMHi,
Feeling overwhelmed?
I'd recommend you hire a landscape designer. It'd be a few hundred dollars for a plan. Then, you can do the labor and save yourself a lot of money.
Getting a tractor won't help much with the long-term crab grass program. That is, the viable seed that is in the soil. With smaller areas, I'd reccomment laying black plastic or a few layers of newspaper to "bake" the soil (of course, best in Summer). That way, it kills all the weed seeds.
Since everyone's situation is different, I'd really recommend the landscape designer. You'll save yourself a lot of headache.

I might try roundup, but not sure if that will kill the weed seeds...crab grass is a sturdy nightmare :o( ...

Re: Need some direction please
Sun, November 13, 2005 - 6:05 PMno, round up won't work. the best way is sheet mulching to weaken the plants and then pulling it out. you'll have to stay on top of pulling whenever it comes back which can be quite laborious. if you haven't already, i recommend also posting this to the permaculture tribe for some more solutions. -
